Mississippi State Fires Head Coach Zach Arnett After One Season

Former Ole Miss Analyst's Tenure Comes to Abrupt End

After a disappointing 5-6 record, including a 51-10 loss to Texas A&M, Mississippi State has decided to part ways with head coach Zach Arnett. The decision was announced Monday by athletic director Zac Selmon.

Arnett, 37, was hired by Mississippi State in January 2023 to replace the late Mike Leach. In his lone season at the helm, the Bulldogs struggled mightily, losing six of their final seven games. The low point of the season came in the season finale against Texas A&M, when Mississippi State was demolished 51-10.

Arnett, a former Ole Miss analyst, has a long history of coaching success at the collegiate level. He served as the co-offensive coordinator at Baylor from 2018 to 2022, helping the Bears to two Big 12 championships and a Sugar Bowl victory. He also spent time as the offensive coordinator at San Jose State and East Carolina.

Despite his impressive resume, Arnett was unable to turn around the fortunes of Mississippi State in his one season as head coach. The Bulldogs finished 5-6 overall and 2-6 in SEC play.

Mississippi State is now searching for its fourth head coach in the past five years. The Bulldogs are expected to conduct a national search for Arnett's replacement.
